How to Prevent Cavities in Children.

Cavities are one of the most common childhood diseases—but also one of the easiest to prevent with good habits from the very beginning. At Dental Artistry, we know that as a parent or caregiver, you want the best for your little one. That’s why we’re sharing the top recommendations to keep your child cavity-free and smiling healthy.

🍼 1. Start oral hygiene early—even before teeth appear

Good dental care begins before the first tooth erupts. Use a damp gauze or cloth to gently clean your baby’s gums after each feeding. Once teeth appear, brush them with a soft toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, appropriate for their age.

🍭 2. Limit sugar intake

Sugar is the number one enemy of children’s teeth. Try to avoid:

  • Sugary juices and sodas

  • Sticky candies or sweets

  • Bottles with milk or juice at bedtime

Offer water, fresh fruits, and healthy snacks instead.

🕒 3. Set regular meal times and avoid constant snacking

Teeth need time to recover from acid attacks. Avoid letting your child snack all day—especially on sugary items. Try to stick to structured meal and snack times, followed by toothbrushing.

🪥 4. Supervised brushing twice a day

Children don’t fully develop the motor skills to brush effectively on their own until age 6–8. Until then, an adult should brush or closely supervise every time. Use fluoride toothpaste and a child-sized toothbrush.

🦷 5. Visit the pediatric dentist by age one

Regular dental checkups help:

  • Detect early signs of cavities

  • Apply fluoride or protective sealants

  • Teach kids how to care for their teeth

  • Build a positive relationship with the dental office

✅ 6. Lead by example

Children learn by imitation. If they see you brushing your teeth, eating healthy, and going to the dentist without fear, they’ll follow your lead.

In summary:
The best way to prevent cavities in your child is with consistency, good habits, and early professional guidance. And remember—baby teeth matter too!
