Are You Brushing Your Teeth Properly?

Brushing your teeth is something most of us do every day… but not always the right way. Poor brushing technique can leave plaque behind, lead to cavities, cause gum bleeding, or even damage your tooth enamel.

At our clinic, we always emphasize that good oral hygiene starts with an effective and mindful brushing technique. So today, we’ll walk you through the proper way to brush your teeth:

1. Choose the right toothbrush

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging your enamel or gums.

  • The brush head should be small, so you can reach all areas of your mouth.

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are worn out.

2. Brush for at least 3 minutes

Brush twice a day, for 3 full minutes each time. Divide your mouth into four sections (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left) and spend at least 30 seconds on each.

3. Hold your toothbrush at a 45° angle

Tilt the brush toward the gumline and use gentle circular or short sweeping motions, not harsh back-and-forth scrubbing. This helps remove plaque without damaging your gums.

4. Don’t forget the inner surfaces

Many people neglect this area. Be sure to brush the inner surfaces of both front and back teeth with the same care.

5. Brush your molars and tongue too

  • Use circular or back-and-forth motions on the chewing surfaces of your molars.

  • Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and help prevent bad breath.

6. Use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. Use a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice for children, and a pea-sized amount for adults).

And don’t forget…

  • Floss daily to clean between your teeth.

  • Schedule professional cleanings at least every 6 months.

  • Talk to your dentist if you experience bleeding, sensitivity, or pain while brushing.
