What Is a Bone Graft and When Is It Needed for Implants?
Dental implants need a solid foundation to be successful—and that foundation is bone. However, not all patients have enough bone volume or density. In these cases, a bone graft may be recommended. This procedure regenerates or rebuilds lost bone, ensuring the implant has proper support.
At Dental Artistry, we’ll explain what a bone graft is, why it may be necessary, and how the process works.
🦴 What Is a Dental Bone Graft?
A bone graft is a surgical procedure in which bone material (natural or synthetic) is placed in the area of bone loss to stimulate new bone growth. Over time, the material integrates with your own bone, forming a strong foundation for a future dental implant.
❓When Is a Bone Graft Necessary?
Bone loss from an old tooth extraction
Previous dental infections that damaged bone
Advanced periodontal disease
Prolonged use of removable dentures
Trauma or jaw fractures
When the available bone doesn’t have enough height or volume for stable implant placement
🛠️ What’s the Procedure Like?
Clinical and radiographic evaluation (CT scan)
Placement of the grafting material (sometimes with a protective membrane)
Healing period (typically 4–6 months)
Once the graft is fully integrated, the implant is placed
In some cases, a small graft can be done at the same time as implant placement.
✅ Is It Painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, so it’s pain-free during surgery. Mild discomfort afterward is normal and can be easily managed with prescribed pain relievers.
