The Importance of Dental Floss: A Small Habit with Big Benefits.

At our dental clinic, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Do I really need to use dental floss if I already brush my teeth?” And the answer is a resounding YES!

While a toothbrush is great for cleaning the visible surfaces of your teeth, it can’t reach the spaces between them where food particles, plaque, and tartar build up. That’s where dental floss comes in.

Why should you floss every day?

🦷 Prevents cavities between teeth: Cavities don’t only form on the surface. Many develop in the tight spaces between teeth due to food debris and plaque accumulation.

🦷 Gum health: Flossing helps prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease by removing plaque that forms just below the gumline.

🦷 Fresher breath: By removing food particles your toothbrush can’t reach, you significantly reduce bad breath.

🦷 Saves money on dental treatments: Prevention is always better—and more affordable—than treatment. Daily flossing can help you avoid more complex procedures in the future.

How to floss correctly:

  1. Use about 40 cm (16 inches) of dental floss and wrap most of it around one of your middle fingers.

  2. Gently slide it between your teeth, forming a “C” shape around each tooth.

  3. Glide it up and down carefully, without hurting your gums.

  4. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

There are also alternatives like interdental brushes or water flossers, which are great options for people with braces or dental implants.

In summary: flossing is a simple habit that takes just a couple of minutes but has a huge impact on your oral health. Make it part of your daily routine—your teeth (and gums) will thank you!
