How to Manage a Child’s Toothache at Home?

A toothache in a child can be distressing for both the child and their parents. It may be caused by a cavity, gum inflammation, a loose tooth, or even the eruption of a permanent tooth. While visiting the dentist is always the best option, there are safe ways to ease the pain at home while waiting for professional care.

At Dental Artistry, we’re sharing simple, effective tips to help manage your child’s toothache at home—safely and gently.

🦷 What Can Cause a Toothache in Children?

  • Tooth decay

  • Infection or abscess

  • Swollen or irritated gums

  • Loose or falling baby tooth

  • Eruption of a permanent tooth

  • Mouth injury or trauma

✅ What Can You Do at Home to Relieve the Pain?

  1. Salt water rinse
Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and have your child rinse gently. This can help reduce inflammation and bacteria.

  2. Cold compress
Apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to the cheek near the painful area for 10–15 minutes. It helps reduce swelling and numb the pain.

  3. Children’s pain reliever
If the pain is strong, you may give a child-appropriate pain medication (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen), following dosage instructions from your pediatrician or dentist.

  4. Avoid hard or hot foods
Serve soft, cool foods and avoid chewing on the sore side.

  5. Keep the area clean
Gently brush around the affected area to remove food particles and plaque.

⚠️ When to See the Dentist Immediately

  • If the pain doesn’t improve within 24–48 hours

  • If there is fever or visible swelling

  • If your child can’t sleep or eat

  • If there’s pus or persistent bad breath
